Bagnell Dam

The Bagnell Dam is the structure that created the Lake of the Ozarks by splitting the Osage River. Before construction on the Bagnell Dam was completed, the main method of crossing the river was the Bagnell Ferry. However, due to many ferry-related injuries, including sinking incidents, the Dam was a much-needed improvement. 

Construction began in 1929 and finished in 1931 in less than 2 years. The Bagnell Dam measures 2,543 feet in length and was built by the Union Electric Power & Light Company of St Louis, Missouri for hydroelectric power generation. The Dam stores water from the Osage River which serves as “fuel” for the Osage Energy Center located inside the dam. The Bagnell Dam was a safer route across the river and a monumental step forward in green energy production, as hydroelectric power doesn’t emit fossil fuels or pollute the air.
